SCATTERING OF ACOUSTICAL WAVES BY PERIODIC ARRAYS OF SCATTERERS

Abstract

A method for simulation the behavior of a sonic composite with periodic arrays of acoustic scatterers based on the homogenization technique is presented. The acoustic scatterers are hollow spheres made from piezoelectric ceramic, while the matrix is made from epoxy resin. The method is used to depict the size effect in the structure of the full band-gaps for the composite. The full band-gaps have the property that any sound wave is not allowed to propagate but is reflected completely. The result is a clear improvement of the noise suppression property for the sonic composites.

Key words: sonic composite, scatterers, full band-gap, homogenization technique.
