EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH ON THE MACHINING OF 2099 AL-LI ALLOY FOR AIRCRAFT APPLICATIONS USING UNCOATED AND DLC-COATED MILLING TOOLS

Abstract


The aerospace industry continuously seeks lightweight materials with high strength-to-weight ratios, and the 2099 Al-Li alloy has emerged as a promising candidate due to its superior mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. However, machining this advanced material presents significant challenges related to tool wear and surface quality. This study investigates the milling performance of 2099 Al-Li alloy using both uncoated and diamond-like carbon coated tools. Experimental trials were conducted under varying cutting parameters to analyze tool wear, surface roughness and tool-life. The results indicate that DLC-coated tools enhance machining performance by reducing tool wear and improving surface finish compared to uncoated tools. These findings provide valuable insights for optimizing the milling process of Al-Li alloys in aerospace applications
