ALTERNATIVE USAGE OF MAXIMUM LIKELIHOOD METHOD TO ESTIMATE THE RAILWAY WHEELSET RELIABILITY PROBABILISTIC MODEL
Abstract
The paper proposes an alternative usage of the Maximum Likelihood Method to estimate the parameters of the probabilistic reliability model using a reduced amount of experimental data. The proposed method involves dividing the operating period into time intervals and using the number of failures in each interval and interval limits instead of considering individual failure times. The classical Maximum Likelihood Method is adapted according to these hypotheses. The resulted alternative method is applied to estimate the wheelset reliability probabilistic model, based on operational data of freight cars. The parameters of the model are estimated under several hypotheses regarding the time intervals. The results are evaluated and the influence on the estimates of the assumptions adopted within the method is identified.
