DESIGN OF MULTIFUNCTIONAL PROSTHESIS FOR TRANSTIBIAL AMPUTATION

Oana Andreea CHIRIAC, Elena-Theodora OANCEA

Abstract

This study presents the development of a transtibial prosthesis adapted for recreational swimming through additive manufacturing. Conventional prostheses are not optimized for aquatic environments, and commercial alternatives remain costly and limited in accessibility. Two configurations were designed using CAD and fabricated from TPU 95A via FDM 3D printing: a fully integrated model replacing the distal segment and a modular variant replacing only the prosthetic foot. Mechanical and functional assessments indicate adequate buoyancy, flexibility, propulsion efficiency, and compatibility with standard coupling systems. The proposed solution demonstrates technical feasibility and cost-effectiveness, supporting accessible, patient-specific aquatic prosthetic applications.
